The consequences of theft in the workplace

23 Feb, 2023 by Marianne Favre Moreillon

According to a recent survey, more than a quarter of the population surveyed admitted to having stolen something at least once in the workplace: broken bond of trust.

The employee's duty of care and loyalty requires that he or she does not behave in such a way as to damage the employer's interests and cause economic loss. In case of violation of this duty, the employee is exposed to sanctions.

If an employee commits a theft to the detriment of his or her employer, the question arises as to what extent the theft can constitute grounds for immediate dismissal.

This article discusses the following topics:

  • duty of care and loyalty of employees
  • theft by the employee at the workplace to the detriment of the employer, colleagues and customers
  • serious breach of trust between employer and employee
  • just cause for immediate termination of an employee caught stealing
  • theft of small value
